The Real Culprit: Dye-Based Film
Most cheap or older window tints use a dye-based construction. The film is made by sandwiching organic dyes between layers of polyester. Those dyes absorb heat and block light — at first. The problem is that dyes are not stable under prolonged UV exposure.
Over time, the UV rays from the sun — especially intense in Utah's high-altitude, low-humidity climate — break down the molecular structure of those dyes. The dyes that originally appeared black or charcoal start shifting in color. Most of them degrade toward the purple or violet end of the spectrum. That's not a coating issue or an installation error. It's just chemistry.
Once the dye starts to fail, it also loses its adhesive integrity, which leads to the telltale bubbling and peeling you see on old tint jobs.
