Utah Window Tint Laws 2026: What's Legal for Your Car
The Short Answer
Utah has specific rules about how dark you can legally tint your car windows. Get it wrong and you're looking at a fix-it ticket — or worse, having to strip film you just paid for. Here's exactly what Utah Code 41-6a-1635 (effective May 7, 2025) allows.
VLT: The Number That Matters
"VLT" stands for Visible Light Transmittance — the percentage of light that passes through your window. A higher number means a lighter tint; a lower number means darker.
- Windshield: must allow at least 70% VLT. Only the top strip (4 inches down from the top, or to the AS-1 line, whichever is lower) can carry tint at all.
- Front side windows: must allow at least 35% VLT, with up to 5% variance allowed when an officer takes a reading.
- Rear windows (including rear side windows behind the driver): no VLT minimum. You can go as dark as you want back there.
No Metallic or Mirrored Finishes
Regardless of darkness, Utah law prohibits any metallic or mirrored appearance on windshield or window tint. If your film reflects like a mirror, it's out — even if the VLT number technically passes.
The Mirror Rule Most People Miss
If you tint any window beyond the windshield's top strip, your vehicle must have both left and right side rear-view mirrors. Most modern cars already do, but it's worth checking on older vehicles before you tint.
What Happens If You're Out of Compliance
A VLT violation in Utah is an infraction — it won't get your license or registration revoked, but it is a ticket, and an officer can meter your windows on the spot.
