New Car, New Tint: Should You Wait Until Spring or Tint It Now?

You Just Got a New Car — Now What?

Congratulations on the new ride. Whether you picked it up in Lehi, drove off a lot in Orem, or ordered online and live out in Eagle Mountain, one of the first upgrades most Utah County drivers think about is window tinting. But here's the question that comes up constantly: should I wait until spring, or just do it now?

Short answer: you don't need to wait. Here's why.

Window Tint Installs Fine in Cold Weather

One of the biggest myths about window tinting is that cold temperatures ruin the installation. Professional-grade films — like the INSULEX True Carbon IR used in our Basic Coverage package, or the X Supreme Nano Ceramic in our flagship Royal Protection package — are installed using professional-grade adhesives that cure properly even in Utah's winter temperatures.

What matters most is the skill of the installer and the quality of the film, not the season. Our installation environment is controlled, so your tint cures correctly regardless of whether it's January in Highland or July in Provo.

The Only Real "Curing" Consideration

After installation, film needs a few days to fully cure. During that window (pun intended), you should avoid rolling down your windows. That's true in any season. Winter tints may take slightly longer to fully clear up if there's initial haze, but this resolves on its own and doesn't affect performance or longevity.

Why Waiting Until Spring Actually Costs You

Every week you drive your new car without tint in Utah County is a week your interior is absorbing UV rays and heat — yes, even in winter. Utah sits at high elevation, and UV exposure is significant year-round whether you're commuting through American Fork or parked in Alpine.

Without tint:

  • Your dashboard and upholstery start fading sooner
  • UV rays hit your skin on every drive
  • Your car's interior heats up faster on sunny winter days than you'd expect

The Royal Protection package (X Supreme Nano Ceramic) comes with a lifetime warranty precisely because it's built to handle years of Utah's intense sun — but only if it's on your car doing its job.

What Utah Law Says About New Car Tinting

Before you tint, it's worth knowing the rules. Under Utah Code 41-6a-1635 (effective May 7, 2025):

  • Windshield: must allow at least 70% VLT. Tinting is only permitted along the top edge — a maximum of 4 inches down from the top, or to the AS-1 line, whichever is lower.
  • Front side windows: must allow at least 35% VLT, with no more than 5% variance observed by an officer using a meter.
  • Rear windows and rear side windows: any darkness is allowed — no VLT minimum.
  • No metallic or mirrored appearance is allowed on any window or windshield.
  • If any window other than the windshield top-edge strip is tinted, the vehicle must have left and right exterior rear-view mirrors.

We apply these limits on every vehicle we tint — from Saratoga Springs to Pleasant Grove — so you're always street-legal.

New Car Warranty: Does Tinting Void It?

This question comes up a lot with new car owners. In almost all cases, window tinting does not void your vehicle's manufacturer warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects consumers from having warranties voided by aftermarket additions unless the manufacturer can prove the modification caused a specific defect.

That said, if you have concerns, check your owner's manual or ask your dealer. We're happy to discuss film options that keep everyone comfortable — including your service advisor in Orem or Provo.

Basic Coverage vs. Royal Protection: Which One for Your New Car?

If you want solid protection at a great value, Basic Coverage (INSULEX True Carbon IR) delivers real infrared rejection and a clean look that holds up over time.

If you want the best — and your new car deserves the best — Royal Protection (X Supreme Nano Ceramic) is our flagship package. It offers superior heat rejection, crystal-clear optics, and comes with a lifetime warranty. For a brand-new vehicle, this is the package that grows with your investment.
