Does Utah Law Affect What You Can Tint?
Before you book, it helps to know what's legal. Under Utah Code 41-6a-1635 (effective May 7, 2025), the rules are:
- Windshield: must allow at least 70% VLT; tinting is only permitted along the top edge, no more than 4 inches down from the top or to the AS-1 line, whichever is lower.
- Front side windows: must allow at least 35% VLT (with no more than 5% variance as observed by a peace officer).
- Rear windows and rear side windows (behind the driver): any darkness is allowed — no VLT minimum.
- No metallic or mirrored appearance on any window.
- If any window other than the windshield top strip is tinted, the vehicle must have functional left and right side mirrors.
