Does Window Tint Affect Your Car Insurance in Utah?

If you're thinking about getting your car windows tinted in Utah County — whether you're in Lehi, Orem, Provo, or Eagle Mountain — you've probably wondered: will this affect my insurance? It's a fair question, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Let's break it down.

What Insurance Companies Generally Look For

Most standard auto insurance policies in Utah don't have a specific line item for window tint. Insurers typically care about two things: risk and compliance. As long as your tint is legal and doesn't obstruct your vision (increasing accident risk), most insurers won't raise your premium just because you tinted your windows.

However, if you file a claim and an adjuster determines that illegal tint contributed to an accident — say, reduced visibility caused a collision — your insurer could use that as grounds to reduce or deny your payout. This is why staying legal isn't just about avoiding tickets; it's about protecting your coverage.

Utah Window Tint Law: What You Need to Know

Under Utah Code 41-6a-1635 (effective May 7, 2025), here are the rules every Utah driver must follow:

  • Windshield: Must allow at least 70% VLT (visible light transmittance). Tinting is only permitted along the top edge — no more than 4 inches down from the top, or to the AS-1 line, whichever is lower.
  • Front side windows: Must allow at least 35% VLT, with no more than 5% variance as measured by a peace officer.
  • Rear windows and rear side windows: Any darkness is permitted — no VLT minimum applies.
  • No metallic or mirrored appearance on any window or windshield.
  • If any window other than the windshield top-edge strip is tinted, your vehicle must have both left and right side rear-view mirrors.

A violation is classified as an infraction — your registration or driver's license cannot be revoked solely for a VLT violation. But that doesn't mean the consequences are trivial, especially if a claim is involved.

Will Tint Void My Insurance or Raise My Rate?

In most cases, no — legal window tint will not void your insurance or raise your premium. In fact, quality tint like the X Supreme Nano Ceramic film in our Royal Protection package can reduce interior heat and UV exposure, which helps preserve your vehicle's condition over time.

What can cause problems:

  • Illegal tint (e.g., front windows below 35% VLT or a fully tinted windshield)
  • Mirrored or metallic films on front windows
  • Any modification that an insurer can argue impaired your ability to drive safely

If you're unsure what your policy says, call your agent and ask directly. Most will confirm that legal, professionally installed tint is a non-issue.

The Safety Argument for Quality Tint

Here's something most drivers in American Fork, Highland, and Saratoga Springs don't consider: proper window tint can actually improve safety. High-quality ceramic or carbon films reduce glare from the Utah sun — which is intense at high altitude — helping you see more clearly on routes like I-15 or Highway 92. Less glare means fewer distractions and better reaction time.

Our Basic Coverage package uses INSULEX True Carbon IR film, which delivers excellent heat and glare rejection. Our flagship Royal Protection package uses X Supreme Nano Ceramic film with a lifetime warranty — the best protection you can get for your vehicle's glass.

Professional Installation Matters

DIY tint kits or unlicensed installers may apply film that doesn't meet Utah's legal requirements — putting you at risk for infractions and potential insurance complications. At King Romer, we serve drivers across Utah County including Alpine, Pleasant Grove, and Provo, and we ensure every installation complies with Utah Code 41-6a-1635.
