Can You Tint Your Windows in Winter? What Utah Drivers Need to Know

If you've been putting off your window tint job until spring, you might be waiting longer than you need to. A common misconception is that cold weather ruins the tinting process — but the truth is more nuanced. As a mobile tinting service covering Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant Grove, Alpine, Highland, Orem, and Provo, King Romer installs professional-grade film year-round. Here's what you actually need to know.

Does Cold Weather Affect Window Tint Installation?

The Short Answer: It Depends on How It's Done

Window tint film requires adhesive to bond properly to the glass. In very cold temperatures, adhesive can become less pliable, which means amateur installations in freezing garages can lead to bubbling, peeling, or poor adhesion. However, professional mobile installation changes the equation.

At King Romer, we work inside your home garage or another sheltered space when temperatures drop. As long as the installation environment stays above approximately 40°F and the glass surface is clean and dry, a high-quality film — like our INSULEX True Carbon IR (Basic Coverage) or X Supreme Nano Ceramic (Royal Protection) — bonds reliably and cures properly.

The Curing Window

After installation, tint film needs a curing period. In warmer months, this can be as short as a few days. In winter, curing may take a bit longer — typically one to two weeks — because sunlight and heat help the adhesive fully set. You may notice light haze or small water pockets during this period; that's completely normal and will clear up. Avoid rolling your windows down until the film has fully cured.

Why Winter Is Actually a Smart Time to Tint

Beat the Spring Rush

Spring and early summer are the busiest seasons for window tinting in Utah County. If you schedule during winter, you'll likely get faster appointment availability and more flexible scheduling — especially important if you're in Lehi, Eagle Mountain, or Saratoga Springs where new residents are constantly moving in.

UV and Heat Protection Starts Now

Utah sits at high elevation, and UV radiation is present year-round — even on overcast winter days. Both of our film packages block harmful UV rays from day one. With the Royal Protection package (X Supreme Nano Ceramic with a lifetime warranty), you start protecting your interior, reducing glare on snowy roads, and improving comfort immediately after installation.

Infrared Heat Rejection Matters in Winter Too

This surprises many drivers: infrared film doesn't just block summer heat — it also helps retain interior warmth in winter by reducing heat loss through the glass. Our INSULEX True Carbon IR film offers genuine IR rejection that makes a noticeable difference in cabin comfort regardless of the season.

Utah Tint Laws You Should Know

Before any installation, it's worth understanding what's legal. Under Utah Code 41-6a-1635 (effective May 7, 2025):

  • Windshield: must allow at least 70% VLT. Tinting is only permitted along the top edge — no more than 4 inches down from the top, or to the AS-1 line, whichever is lower.
  • Front side windows: must allow at least 35% VLT (with no more than 5% variance observed by an officer).
  • Rear windows and rear side windows: any darkness is permitted — no VLT minimum.
  • No metallic or mirrored appearance on any window.
  • If any window other than the windshield top-edge is tinted, the vehicle must have both left and right exterior rear-view mirrors.

King Romer installs film that complies with these requirements by default. We're happy to walk you through your options during the quote process.
